Identified Need
VTE, including deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a common and often fatal complication in patients with cancer. Data demonstrates that patients with cancer have the lowest rate of VTE prophylaxis in both inpatient and ambulatory settings.

Though proven, effective guidelines are available to prevent and treat DVT in such high risk patients, most who could benefit from such strategies do not benefit from them since too few health care professionals are aware of the evidence-based practices for identifying high risk patients and providing preventive, diagnostic or therapeutic services.
Educational Objectives
Upon successful of this activity the learner should be better able to:
  • Evaluate the level of VTE risk for all patients with cancer
  • Discuss appropriate screening, monitoring and intervention strategies for reducing VTE in the oncology setting
  • Apply evidence-based updates to clinical practice guidelines and emerging research into treatment planning of VTE prophylaxis and management in patients
  • Describe management and clinical considerations for bleeding, renal impairment, thrombocytopenia, and other comorbidities when integrating VTE prophylaxis
  • Formulate strategies for those that transition to outpatient care in the oncology setting
  • Outline the various types of cultural diversities (gender, age, race, religion, culture, etc) that relate to demographics, diagnosis and treatment

The American Board of Medical Specialties ( ABMS ) and the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) have embarked on a joint initiative to quantify and evaluate a set of 6 physician core competencies by which the individual physician will be measured for Residency Certification, Board Certification and more recently, Maintenance of Certification (MOC).

The California legislature has passed AB 1195 which states that as of July 1, 2006 all Category 1 CME activities that relate to patient care must include a cultural diversity/linguistics component.
