City of Hope’s National Professional Salon Industry recognizes industry leaders each year for their outstanding professional and philanthropic contributions at the Spirit of Life Award Celebration.

The Spirit of Life Award is presented to individuals who exemplify the ideals and values that have guided City of Hope for a century, and whose professional and humanitarian accomplishments are worthy of celebration.
Recipients of this prestigious award include a broad range of leaders from the world of business, entertainment, science and philanthropy. What connects them is a shared commitment to elevating the human condition and a profound belief in the power of each individual to effect change.
The Spirit of Life, by its very name, represents the intangible qualities that make an individual’s life worthy of admiration: their generosity, their ability to inspire and their desire to make a difference in the world.

Harlan Kirschner
The Kirschner Group, Inc has achieved worldwide success in the beauty industry with over 30 years of experience and has evolved into a thriving global professional sales organization. Harlan’s career began in 1979 working for a master distributor responsible for sales and warehousing operations, where he soon moved into management. While learning the beauty business, management and operations, it soon sparked Harlan’s desire to create and build his own company in the beauty industry. With the skills and knowledge he had attained he set out on the journey to what now is The Kirschner Group, Inc. 

The company started with a few small lines servicing the west coast territory. Harlan covered part of this territory calling on customers in all classes of the beauty trade to learn every aspect of the business. In 1999 The Kirschner Group, Inc expanded their territories into the Midwest and Southwest acquiring many of the nation’s premier sales organizations strengthening their ability to offer increased coverage and services. Throughout the next decade the company continued to acquire top performing sales agencies throughout the Northeast and Southeast regions becoming the first organization to offer nationwide coverage to their manufacturers. A major milestone was in 2004 when the Kirschner Group, Inc expanded internationally servicing Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.   

The Kirschner Group, Inc now offers complete global coverage to manufacturers with 36 professional sales reps within the United States, 17 sales people internationally and 54 store support and educational personnel.
Harlan and his team have a long list of top customers they service and manufacturers they represent in the beauty industry, making The Kirschner Group, Inc the most successful rep group in the industry.

Harlan Kirschner is currently a board of director member for our industries Professional Beauty Association (joint venture partners for the production of Cosmoprof North America), chairman of the Manufacturer Leadership Council and treasurer for the Western Buying Conference for the last 16 years. His passion and love for the beauty industry shows in his dedication and the difference he has made in building his company.

Campus Tour with Harlan

In January 2014 50 beauty professionals joined Harlan Kirschner for a tour of the City of Hope campus.  Highlights throughout the day included seeing the Positive Image Center where patients of all ages learn to minimize the cosmetic side effects of illness or medical treatment with cost-free services and programs tailored to meet their needs.  Robert Stone, President & CEO of City of Hope, spoke to the group at lunch along with City of Hope patient special Hannah Komai, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancer of the bone, three years ago.  Now 23 and in remission, she is studying to be a pediatric oncology nurse.
