Biography

Biography

Smita Bhatia established the Department of Population Sciences at City of Hope in 2006. She is the first holder of the Ruth Ziegler Chair in Population Sciences. She serves as the Associate Chair for the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), coordinating survivorship research across 200 pediatric oncology institutions in the U.S. She was elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation in recognition of meritorious and outstanding contributions as a physician scientist. She is the recipient of the Frank H Oski Lectureship Award from the American Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology to honor outstanding investigation in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. In 2012, she was elected to the Board of Directors for the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Bhatia’s research has focused primarily on cancer outcomes, with a special emphasis on the long-term health and well being of cancer survivors. As Chair of the Children’s Oncology Group Late Effects Committee between 2000 and 2008, she was responsible for facilitating and promoting research relating to complications following childhood cancer among patients placed on COG therapeutic trials. As Associate Chair of Children’s Oncology Group, she continues to shape the survivorship and cancer control agenda within the cooperative group.

As Director of the Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Program at City of Hope, she is responsible for ensuring complete follow-up of all patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation, and identifying chronic health issues among the survivors.

As Director of the Center for Cancer Survivorship at City of Hope, Dr. Bhatia has assumed the responsibility of developing multidisciplinary survivorship clinics for cancer survivors – providing these individuals with state of the art comprehensive follow-up care in the setting of clinical research.

Finally, as Associate Director for Population Research, she is responsible for ensuring that the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program makes significant scientific contributions in cancer etiology and outcomes, reducing the burden of cancer across all segments of the population, through collaborative, multidisciplinary initiatives.

Bhatia is a member of the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology, American Association of Cancer Research, American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, and American Society for Clinical Investigation.  She serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for St. Baldrick Foundation, T32 Training grants for University of California, San Francisco, University of Minnesota, and Texas Children’s Cancer Center, and the University of Minnesota Comprehensive Cancer Center. She serves on the Editorial Board for Biology of Bone Marrow Transplantation, and also serves as the Section Editor for the journal Cancer.

Bhatia has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Nature Cancer Reviews, Lancet, Lancet Oncology, and Nature Genetics, among others. Bhatia has also served as principal investigator or co-investigator on multiple major research grants, funded by the National Institutes of Health, Leukemia Lymphoma Society and St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Bhatia received her medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1984 and completed fellowships in pediatric Hematology/ Oncology/ Bone Marrow Transplantation at the University of Minnesota. She also received a Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota.
