In service to those who have served |
| They’ve lived a life of service, sacrificing for their country to preserve our freedoms and our way of life. Now, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has enlisted a pioneering City of Hope program to come to these heroes’ aid and help their last days be the best they can be. |
| A bond no cancer could break |
| They met in high school, fell in love and later wed. In their 41-year marriage, they built a life together, grew ever closer — and faced two cancer diagnoses. The second would prove to be an insurmountable challenge, but the bond between them endures. |

| Q&A: A bladder cancer primer |
| As organs go, the bladder skates by unnoticed — until that extra cup of coffee comes calling. When cancer strikes the bladder, though, it definitely gets expert medical attention. A specialist in the disease discusses common questions, including how to lower risk. |
| Diabetes and genetics and kidneys, oh mi(croRNA)! |
| A fascinating field of research explores tiny pieces of genetic material called microRNA. These molecules control the way genes express themselves, and scientists are finding them everywhere. Now they’ve been linked to diabetes-related kidney disease. |
| Five healthy lifestyle choices could prevent nearly 25 percent of colorectal cancers. Danish researchers monitored the lifestyle habits of more than 55,000 people ages 50 to 64 for 10 years. About 680 of them developed colorectal cancer during the study. After comparing the study participants’ lifestyle habits, the researchers found five key factors that could have prevented nearly one quarter of the diagnoses: At least 30 minutes of exercise a day; no more than seven alcoholic drinks a week for women and 14 for men; no smoking; a healthy, high-fiber diet that also is low in red meat and processed meat; and a waist size no more than 34.6 inches for women and 40.1 inches for men. The American Cancer Society has more information on ways to prevent colorectal cancer. |
