Research has lifted childhood cancer survival from 20 percent to more than 80 percent in the last three decades. Now physicians can focus on life after cancer for many young adults, and that sometimes turns complicated: Survivors are at risk for long-term side effects of treatment, including heart disease. New City of Hope research might put that in the past, as well.

Did you know?
The number of Americans with diabetes will nearly double by 2034. According to researchers, the growing incidence of obesity coupled with an aging population (age is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes) could push the number of Americans with diabetes to 44 million over the next 25 years. And spending on the disease will nearly triple, to more than $330 billion per year. They can’t do much about aging, but experts agree that getting a handle on obesity will be key to avoiding what may become a diabetes supernova. In fact, recent research showed that among patients at high risk of type 2 diabetes, losing just 7 percent of their body weight and engaging in moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes five times a week cut their risk dramatically. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has more information on risk factors and how to lower your risk.
